Fr. Bernie was my high school chemistry teacher in Tulsa in the early 1960s. He was a dynamic speaker and an excellent teacher. Based on his talk, he was drinking heavily even then. He hid it well, although looking back he failed to show up for class fairly often.
He was a good man, with fewer character flaws than most of us. In his talk, I thought that the man I knew was being too hard on himself. He had a positive effect on me.
I exchanged emails with him a few years ago. Of course he mentioned his recovery and sobriety – the first time I had heard of his struggle.
He passed away in May 2015 – apparently still sober. bless you, fr. Bernie.
