I got sober with the speaker 45+ years ago. She has me by a few months for time in the program. She was a waitress at a Deli. Early on I was at a participation meeting at 26th and Broadway fellowship hall in Santa Monica. The guys were all talking about the ugly women they came to next to and were referring to them as old tomatoes. My thought was am I going to spend the rest of my days listening to this kind of crap. Then the meeting leader called on Mary Ann. She got up in front with the mike and her hair was all frizzed out her uniform was spotted with food and pen marks where she had been jamming that ball point into her front pocket all day and she looked up and said “I’m that old tomato you’ve been talking about” and she went on to graphically describe some guy trying to put both ends of his anatomy in her stool at the same time. the meeting was roaring with laughter I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes and my stomach hurt and that taught me ab important lesson that we can laugh at ourselves, have a great time and do it sober.
